Abstract
Acompletely-in-the-canal (CIC) type of instruments offer many potential benefits in hearing aid fittings. Both real ear measurements and coupler measurements are used to verify the CIC instrument performances. To be convenient, however, the transformation values of the real-ear-to-coupler differences (RECDs) can be applied to predict the real ear performances from the coupler data. The purpose of this study was to obtain the RECDs for CIC hearing aids in adults. The subjects were 24 (16 male, 8 female) adults with mild-to-severe sensorineural hearing losses. They were all wearing CIC hearing instruments with nonlinear amplification systems. A probe-microphone system was used for measuring both the real-ear aided gain (REAG) and 1cc coupler gain. The mean value of RECDs were -6.26 dB at 250 Hz, -4.82 dB at 500 Hz, -4.87 dB at 1000 Hz, -1.02 dB at 2000 Hz, -0.48 dB at 3000 Hz, 5.48 dB at 4000 Hz. These results can be applied to estimate the REAG for adults wearing the CIC hearing aids from the 1cc coupler gain.
